Porsche Reclaim their Crown!!

The Bulls Head 2018 Treasure Hunt went off very well indeed. On a very breezy Saturday (13th October) 13 teams rocked up to have a go at, the now famous, Bulls Head car treasure hunt! The teams had to drive a route that took them to our sister pub the Three Greyhounds Inn via Ollerton and Toft and bring them back via Lower Peover and Knutsford. They had to collect 38 clues while driving carefully around the countryside and they also had to answer 30 very tough quiz questions too. The teams also had to collect five specific objects and also take five photos to bring back. The drive took everyone around two hours.

All the teams arrived back safely and this time round they were welcomed back at our Roebuck Inn to some complimentary nibbles while the papers were marked by Tim and Jess. Everyone made a donation and we raised £100 for St. Wilfrid’s Church here in the village of Mobberley.

In third place were the ‘What the Tuk’ team who did the whole treasure hunt in a tuk tuk!! Their friends ….the ‘Mother Tukkers’, the second tuk tuk on show, were indeed second but the winners this year were the ‘Collins Girls Plus Ant’ in their Porsche Cayman. Well done to them.

This is a third win for the Collins Girls having won the very first Bully Treasure Hunt way back in 2011 and reappearing to win it again in 2014….. now they are, with Ant, the victors again meaning that the Cup goes to the 3P (Porsche, Pub and Pint) Car Club who have regained the trophy back from the Good Fellows Car Club for the first time since 2015!

Thank you to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing you all in 2019!

Mobberley Fete

The Bull’s Head’s 2nd annual village fete was held on Saturday 25th August and was another fantastic success. The rain had poured on the Friday and continued to do so all Saturday morning, much to everyone’s disappointment. Then the weather Gods smiled on us again and the sun came out blazing from 12pm, ready for another fun-filled fete day.

70 dogs showed up for the dog show and pranced and preened for judge Vic Barlow. Best in Show and winner of the Prized Pedigree category was Shetland Robbie. Coming in 1st place in the Cheeky Chappie category was Jack Russel Scooby, taking the top spot in the Golden Oldie category was Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Dusty, leading the way for the Marvellous Mixed Breeds was Merlin and in the adorable Perfect Puppy category, the winner was Pomeranian Bear.

There was a fantastic array of sweet and savoury bakes on offer in our Mobberely Bake Off, all of which were sliced and sold off after the judging to raise money for the Guide Dogs charity.

Our Dad Dancing competition was very well received, and much hilarity was had by all who witnessed the very cringeworthy moves being showcased by the local dads.

Live music, a barbecue, a very busy outside bar and a very busy pub all added to the day.

A big thank you goes out to our sponsors for the day – Wilmslow Dog Grooming, Ark Veterinary Surgery and Vic Barlow, with a special mention going to Guide Dogs, who joined us with their fabulous stall of goodies and their beautiful dogs.

Thank you to everyone who visited us on the day – we hope you had as much fun as we did! Looking forward to seeing you all August Bank Holiday Saturday next year!

Halloween at the Bulls Head!!

What a great night! Lucy, James and Ed did a fantastic job getting the pub set up for Halloween….there were ghosts, skeletons and lots of treats as well as a large amount of pumpkins and ghoul like creatures! It was a funny old day and we thought the village had forgotten what was happening.. but no….by 8pm we were full…a couple of Draculas chatted at the bar…a mummy ordered a pint of Cheshire Cat, witches were everywhere and there were a number of customers that looked like fatal accidents!! But this is by far the best response to a Halloween Party we have ever had and well done to everyone who took part there were certainly 30 guests who dressed to kill…literally!!

In the end Greg and his posse won the £50 of Bully vouchers…sorry he was simply to frightening to photograph!!

The Bully team got face painted except for owner Tim who simply went with white eyes and Ed who was a proud Ghost buster!

Thank you to all our loyal locals for rocking up and giving it a go and to Dave and Howard our House band duo who entertained everyone wonderfully….look forward to seeing you all next year….

Bulls Head treasure hunt won by 3P Car club for the fifth year!!

Club-LogoThe day was wet (initially) but we still had enough teams to make a good day of it. At 3pm the teams assembled for the annual Bulls Head Treasure Hunt which, as tradition would have it, is between the Good Fellows Car Club and the Porsche Pub and Pint (3P) Club.

The treasure trail took the cars off towards our sister pub the Church Inn (also in Mobberley) and a dash round the graveyard of St. Wilfrid’s Church and then off to Wilmslow, Mottram, Alderley Edge picking up clues as they went.

Teams also had to answer 40 quiz questions while picking up clues. I would like to thank our business partners the Cheshire Smokehouse, our Log and landscape gardeners (and a lot more) Paul and Rick at Caddis and the Foden Lane Nursery and of course our very own Church Inn for allowing the teams to run around their domains picking up clues!!

GF-LogoThe overall winners in the end were Fraser and Jane of the Scooby Doos who beat off a brilliant challenge by Jonathan and Lindsay of the ‘Hairdressers’ team by half a point! Literally never has a ‘Good Fellow’ club team come so close to ensuring the Good Fellows a win overall.

In third place were the Targa Twosome Phil and Roger all the way from Cholmondeley! They delivered the highest treasure hunt score but slipped up on the quiz….no smart phone apparently!!

Anyway congratulations to all the teams that took part but particularly the Scooby Doos (pictured) with their prize which was kindly donated by Martin from Porsche Chester. The prize was a Porsche Drive Day at Silverstone and of course the cup which will be engraved in the 2015 winners names.

Next year the Treasure Hunt will be moved to late September to avoid holidays etc.

Paul returns to conquer the Cheshire Cat Six.

Paul and his cycling partner arrived in sunshine at the Roebuck Inn having completed the ‘Cheshire Cat Six’. The Cheshire Cat Six is a journey around the six pubs owned by us here at Cheshire Cat Pubs and Inns. Paul had already partnered Clare to achieve the Cheshire Cat Quad a few years ago when we had four pubs but with the addition of the Fitzherbert Arms and the Roebuck Inn, Paul was ready to conquer the new challenge! As you will see Paul started his journey from our Fitzherbert Pub on Lord Stafford’s estate in Swynnerton, Staffordshire. He headed then to another Lord’s estate and our Cholmondeley Arms pub before weaving his way, supported by his co-pilot Steve, to our Three Greyhounds Inn pub in Allostock. They then headed for Mobberley..the easy part! Up the hill to the Church Inn before circling down to the Bulls Head and the Roebuck Inn bot in Mill Lane. 76 miles was recorded and then Tim own owner made sure they we fed and watered and given their bottles of fizz to celebrate their achievement.

Then it was back on the saddle for the return trip to Swynnerton! Well done lads a great effort. Who else wants to take up the Cheshire Cat Challenge??

An eating out review by The Cook Twit

After landing from a week away golfing with some chums, The Cooktwit needed to be in top form to placate The Flame. Country walks with a decent feed tends to do the trick. In stepped The Bulls Head in Mobberley. Mobberley is a quaint village set in Cheshire between Knutsford and Wilmslow. It tends to be one of the places the big North West football clubs use to house prospective foreign talent.

A Hat trick for ‘Ted’s Tarts’

q2Wednesday Evening saw Lord Ted’s quiz final at the Bulls head, with 16 teams battling to win.

Every month the winning quiz teams are awarded points to join the leader board, the season runs from October to April. At the final quiz of the season double points are awarded to the top 5 teams. There were three teams all very close in the leader board last year’s winners ‘The Almighty’s’, ‘Ted’s Tarts’ and ‘Hearding Cats and Co.’

After a very exciting quiz the results were announced… ‘Ted’s Tarts’ were pushed to the top of the leader board after a triumphant win! Each team member won a £20.00 voucher and a Whisky tasting for the whole team. As well as winning the quiz and consequently the leader board one lucky team member also won ‘Stand up sit down bingo.’

A huge congratulations to Ted’s Tarts and we look forward to seeing you at the ‘Ted to Head’ on May 27th at the Three Greyhounds in Allostock…

Tingle with Dingle Gin!

A trip to Dingle Bay learn more…

A trip to Ireland was had. The homeland of Barry our landlord who has just done a craic’ing job with Irish week at the Bulls Head. Mary, too our proud owner is from the Emerald Isle and she and Tim went off to discover Dingle Bay and a craft distillery therein!

“It was a cool March day but the sun was in the sky and the journey through County Kerry was a picturesque one. Reaching Dingle Bay and visiting the craft distillery was the main objective of the trip but to arrive in Dingle itself was a real pleasure. What a beautiful little town it is. The views, scenery and of course the warmth of the welcome and the hospitality that following were memorable to say the least.

A big bowl of chowder with soda bread was the order of the day before we arrived at the distillery to meet Joe who offered a ‘wee’ tour and of course a gin and tonic at the end!!

The Dingle Distillery is there to produce a fine craft whiskey and to promote this fact Kilbeggan are helping by bottling a Dingle named whiskey . You see whiskey has to mature and while all that maturing is going on there is a lot of money invested. So to help the process barrels of whiskey were sold as investments (like a type of crowd funding) to raise money to ensure the whiskey in those barrels becomes one of the best in Ireland. So what else can be made in a distillery while one waits for the whiskey maturing process to complete?

Gin and vodka is the answer and that’s how we found out about the Dingle Distillery in the first place….Dingle Gin! By now many gin lovers will have had a single Dingle or indeed a double Dingle and tonic under young Barry’s guidance at the Bully. The gin is very good indeed with one or two Irish botanicals as well as the big juniper flavour. They say lime is best with it, but all the signs said lemon so take your pick.

If Vodka is your thing they have distilled one of those too in a very impressive blue bottle….in fact the bottle the gins in is equally impressive with a small plaque on it with Dingle Bay proudly reflected. If you are ever in Ireland make an effort to visit Dingle you will fall in love with it and probably the high spirits that exist there!”

Dingle Gin, Vodka and the first batch of Dingle Whiskey can be enjoyed anytime at the Bulls head just ask for a single Dingle!
